C60, [60]Fullerene (CAS number 99685-96-8) is a molecule with prominent electron acceptor property composed of 60 carbons in the shape of a hollow football with 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons. Fullerene is unsaturated, each carbon connecting to 3 other carbons instead of 4 with fused 5 and 6 membered rings. C60 was discovered back in 1985 and monumental discovery resulted Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996, awarded to Robert Curl, Harold Kroto, and Richard Smalley.
C60 from Ossila was used in the high-impact paper (IF 29.4), Single-Layer Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes With Near-Unity Internal Quantum Efficiency, O. Sachnik et al., Adv. Mater., 35 (26), 2300574 (2023); DOI: 10.1002/adma.202300574; and paper (IF 29.4), Single-Layer Organic Light-Emitting Diode with Trap-Free Host Beats Power Efficiency and Lifetime of Multilayer Devices,O. Sachnik et al., Adv. Mater., 36 (16), 2311892 (2024); DOI: 10.1002/adma.202311892.
High purity [5,6]-Fullerene-C60 (carbon 60, or C60, fullerenes) for use in thermal evaporation systems as either electron acceptors, n-type semiconductors or interface layers. Recent research show that C60 is also an extremely potent antioxidant that helps to lessen the signs of aging. The cage soccer-ball like unique shape offers great advantage to absorb and contain free radicals, inhibits the toxicity of chemical toxicant inside the body and protect them from damaging healthy cells. Clinical studies also show that C60 reduces wrinkles and protect human skin against UV damage.
Dissolved in grape seed oil at the concentration of 3 mg/ml, C60 could effectively and quickly relieve skin itching and pain in muscles, tendons, and joints when applied on the skin. While dissolved in olive oil, C60 has a therapeutic effect on inflammatory skin diseases, cancers, and intestinal diseases.
