Iron (III) Oxide Nanopowder with Various Polymorphs

Abundant anode material for energy storage applications

Overview | Product Information | Related Products

Iron Oxide (Fe2O3) powder, CAS number 1309-37-1, has a wide range of applications such as pigments, catalysts, and thermite. Iron (III) oxide has various polymorphs, predominantly α-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3.

α-Fe2O3 has a rhombohedral crystal structure and occurs as hematite in nature. It exhibits antiferromagnetism below 260 K and weak ferromagnetism between 260 K to 950 K (Néel temperature). Recently, iron oxide has been applied as anode materials in Li-ion batteries, demonstrating high theoretical capacity (924-1007 mAh/g) during the lithiation processes. A hybrid electrode based on α-Fe2O3 and MnO2 operates stably in a wide range of voltage from −0.9 V to 0.9 V, with an energy density of 12.5 Wh/kg.

γ-Fe2O3 is known as the mineral maghemite, adopting a cubic crystal structure. It displays ferromagnetism at room temperature and originally finds application in recording tapes. Nanoparticles of γ-Fe2O3 incorporate with graphene for Li-ion battery anodes. The composite anodes exhibit high reversible capacity at 711 mAh/g, with capacity retention of 94% after 50 cycles.
