High-purity [5,6]-Fullerene-C70 (carbon 70 fullerenes, or C70) for use in thermal evaporation systems, where increased optical absorption is important. C70 fullerene, a close relative to C60 fullerene, is made of 70 carbon atoms bonded to form 25 hexagons and 12 pentagons. It exists in the shape of a hollow rugby ball rather than the football/soccer ball shape associated with C60.
The increased curvature of C70 fullerene increases its reactivity compared to C60. It also means C70 is less symmetrical, with a more complicated electronic structure. It has a higher density of states near the LUMO level, enhancing it's ability to accept electrons. This results in C70 having different electronic and optical properties that are more suited to applications in organic electronics. C70 can absorb light across a wide range of wavelengths due to its boarder and more extended absorption spectrum.
C70 fullerene has been used as electron acceptor materials in organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Its charge transport properties have seen C70 used in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). C70 has also been used in nanomedicine, materials science, optoelectronics, and energy storage.
