Material Science Research Spring Meeting 2025

This month, Ossila had the pleasure of attending the Material Science Research Spring Meeting in Seattle USA as an industrial sponsor. We also supported Christopher Passmore, a third year PhD student at the University of Sheffield, and student writer for Ossila, in attending the conference through our conference fund. We asked him to tell us a bit about his experience:

With many parallel sessions running throughout the conference, choosing which talks to attend was no small task. I focused on sessions that aligned with my research interests, particularly those on self-assembly, “magic” structures, and the manufacturing of structurally coloured systems. These talks sparked new ideas and inspired potential directions for my own work that I’m excited to explore in the coming months. There was also many talks on topics like Li-ion batteries, solar panels and piezo electric materials, which attracted large interest.

I presented some of our recent research on large area colloidal crystal fabrication. We’re working with spherical particles which self-assemble into periodically ordered structures. We’ve used slot die coating to manufacture colloidal crystals and have demonstrated an ability to control the packing structure. This work has promising applications in areas such as next-generation batteries, photovoltaics, and photonic materials.

It was great to see Ossila’s strong presence at the exhibition with a double booth, showcasing their offering of thin film manufacturing and testing products.
