Ossila Runs the Sheffield Half Marathon for SolarAid
On Sunday 23rd March, members of the Ossila team laced up their running shoes and joined 6,484 other participants in the Sheffield Half Marathon. Our team took on the rather hilly 13.1 mile course to raise money for SolarAid, an international development charity working to bring clean, renewable energy to communities in sub-Saharan Africa.
SolarAid’s mission is to create a world where everyone has access to safe, sustainable light. They work alongside communities in the most rural and hard to reach areas to tackle poverty and the climate crisis through access to clean, safe solar lights. So far, they've delivered an incredible 2.4 million solar lights across the globe.
Thanks to the generous support of our friends, family, and colleagues, we have raised £785 so far!
According to SolarAid’s impact calculator, the money we have raised will result in:
52 solar lights being distributed
277 people gaining access to clean light
196 people transitioning away from dangerous and toxic light sources
$6,570 saved in energy costs each year
231 people feeling safer in their homes
48 more children able to study after dark

As SolarAid puts it:
“590 million people across sub-Saharan Africa live without electricity. When the sun goes down, the working day ends for millions of people. For millions of others, the only option is to ignite kerosene lamps and paraffin candles, which emit toxic fumes into the earth’s atmosphere. But with the flick of a switch, we can change that story. Every solar light in someone’s hand is an instant win for people and the planet.”
We’re proud to support SolarAid in their mission and grateful for everyone who contributed to our fundraiser.
