1,4-bis(4-amino-2-trifluoromethylphenoxy)benzene (6FAPB), CAS number 94525-05-0, is an aminophenyl ether bearing two trifluoromethyl groups at the meta-positions to the amines. 1,4-Bis(4-amino-2-trifluoromethylphenoxy)benzene is a precursor for synthesizing polyimides which possess high thermal resistant (5% thermal weight loss at 525 °C), extraordinary mechanical properties (tensile strength > 60 MPa, Young's modulus > 4 GPa) and outstanding insulation properties (breakdown strength > 358 kV/mm). Therefore, these polyimides can be used as low energy consumption insulation materials. The steric effect from the trifluoromethyl groups reduces the intermolecular aggregation, resulting low refractive index and high transparency to the polyimides.
The polyimides derived from 6FAPB can be used as interlayers for current collectors in high energy lithium-ion batteries. This type of current collectors improves 16–26% specific energy and can self-extinguish fires under short circuits.
