COOH functionalized double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNT-COOH) consist of two concentric single-walled nanotubes (SWCNTs) with the outer SWCNT functionalized with carboxylic acid groups. These carboxylic functional groups enable DWCNT-COOH to form dispersions for homogeneous material composites. Additionally, the carboxylic acid groups allow further functionalization of the DWCNT, such as with perylenediimide (PDI). PDI reacts with the COOH groups through an amidation reaction, forming DWCNT-PDI as a donor-acceptor light-harvesting material.
DWCNT-COOH can be used to prepare nanotube-silicon heterojunction solar cells. The functionalized double-walled carbon nanotubes serve as a charge separation layer, a hole transport layer, and a charge collection layer in the solar cells.
