OH functionalized double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNT-OH) are formed by a singled-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) nested within a hydroxylated SWCNTs. The hydroxy-functionalized DWCNTs have an improved dispersibility, making them favorable for reinforcing polymers and composites. The reinforced polymers and composites exhibit enhanced electrical conductivity once the percolation limit of DWCNT-OH is reached (i.e. 0.85 wt% in polyimide 11).
DWCNT-OH can be further modified to introduce other functional groups, such as trifluoroacetate groups, to the carbon nanotubes. This functionalization can be easily achieved by reacting DWCNT-OH with trifluoroacetic acid anhydride. DWCNT-OH are also used as templates for growing tungsten carbide nanosheets with high surface area, due to their homogeneous dispersion in ethylene glycol.
