(4-(1,2,2-Triphenylvinyl)phenyl)methanol (CAS number 1015082-83-3) is a tetraphenylethylene building block functionalised with a hydroxymethyl group. Due to its propeller shape, (4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)methanol is commonly used for the synthesis of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) macromolecules. The fully conjugated core of (4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)methanol makes it ideal for end-capping macromolecules in dyes used for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These DSSCs demonstrate a power conversion efficiency of 6.29% and an open-circuit photovoltage of 804 mV.
(4-(1,2,2-Triphenylvinyl)phenyl)methanol is also employed as a pendant group in liquid crystals through ionic interaction. (4-(1,2,2-Triphenylvinyl)phenyl)methanol-liquid crystal exhibits polarized fluorescent emission at 475 nm (excitation at 360 nm).
