NDI-2EH-2THBr is a naphthalene diimide (NDI) derivative with two branched ethylhexyl solubilizing alkyl chains and two 2-bromothienyl groups attached to the electron deficient NDI core to extend its conjugation. The naphthalene diimide core is rigid and the thiophenes attached give the molecule a degree of flexibility when it is embedded into the backbone of a polymer. The bromide function groups enable NDI-2EH-2THBr a versatile monomer for further reactions such as Stille or Suzuki coupling reactions to build more complex structures.

Conjugated small molecule electrolyte SME1, acting as cathode interlayer (CIL) and prepared from 4,9-bis(5-bromothiophen-2-yl)− 2,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone (NDI-2EH-2THBr) and 3,3′-(2-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)-9H-fluorene-9,9-diyl)bis(N,N-dimethylpropan-1-amine) (FL3N-2BAPE) via one-step Suzuki coupling reaction, possesses the excellent universality in varied non-fullerene systems. A PCE of 18.4% was achieved for a single-junction binary device based on PM6:BTP-eC9 as the active layer and SME1 as cathode interlayer.
