Tetrakis(4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)phenyl)methane (CAS number 875772-13-7) is a tetraphenylmethane building block functionalized with a pinacolborane on each of the phenyl groups at the para-position. The central carbon in the ligand is in sp3 hybridization, leading to a tetrahedral structure and thus reduced conjugation. The pinacolborane groups enable facile coupling reactions for the synthesis of 3D COFs. The resulting COFs with tetraphenylmethane moieties exhibit a high surface area of 1553 m2/g and a high H2 uptake capacity of 7.4 wt%.
Photoswitching porous organic frameworks can be synthesized with tetrakis(4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)phenyl)methane and azo derivatives. The flexibility introduced by tetrakis(4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)phenyl)methane allows the E⇋Z photoisomerization, which impacts the absorption capacity of N2 and CO2.
